Help Fight Hunger
While the majority of people living in hunger are in developing countries, you don't need to travel to a different country to help — there are many ways in which you can join the fight against hunger locally (there are hungry people in America, too).
If you're local to Sandpoint, why not donate some food items to Bonner Community Food Center? Visit www.foodbank83864.com to see items needed right now, and drop some in next time you're passing.
Nationally, Feeding America has a Food Bank Locator by which you can look for food banks in all 50 states.
Not all food banks are listed, but try www.feedingamerica.org to look for one near you.
You can also support the many organizations to help fight hunger worldwide. Here are a few we can recommend:
Convoy of Hope is a faith-based international hunger relief organization, which runs a variety of community initiatives to help the hungry. Visit www.convoyofhope.org to find out about volunteering, donating and other ways to contribute to the organization's valuable work.
Heifer International strives to help people help themselves, by providing not just immediate relief, but gifts of livestock and training to provide sources of sustainable income for poor families around the world. "By giving families a hand-up, not just a hand-out, we empower them to turn lives of hunger and poverty into self-reliance and hope," the group says. Find out more at www.heifer.org.
The Hunger Site at www.thehungersite.com is a 'click-to-donate' website. Just by clicking their free 'Click here to give' button, you'll generate a donation equal to 1.1 cups of rice to people living in hunger, paid for by website sponsors. You can click once a day, every day of the year; if your were that rigorous, you'd generate 365 cups of rice.
Freerice is operated by the UN World Food Programme and offers trivia games by which players donate, for free, 10 grains of rice for each correct answer. Sponsors displayed with correct answers pay for the rice. Go to www.freerice.com.
The International Children's Network (ICN) aims to help children break the cycle of poverty and hunger through education. To find out how to sponsor a child and give the gift of education, visit www.icnchildren.net.
Forward Edge International mobilizes volunteers to help alleviate suffering through disaster-response work, healthcare projects and programs for vulnerable children. Visit www.forwardedge.org to find out how to get involved.
Mercy Corps was founded in 1981 with the mission to alleviate suffering, poverty and oppression by helping people build secure, productive and just communities. Go to www.mercycorps.org to see more and donate.
